Rather than a scene of market life, this is a measured drawing of the front of a single stall, the main elevation as an architect or builder would set it out on paper, credited in the title to a Mr Aubry. Elevation drawings like this showed a structure's front face at true scale, without perspective, so a carpenter or mason could read its proportions, openings and fittings directly. Stalls of this kind were a common part of nineteenth-century French markets, where repeatable fixtures let vendors set up each day. The drawing is worth a closer look for how it treats the working front as the main concern, a reminder that market design was largely a practical craft.
