This architectural plan shows the ground floor of the eastern section, the Corps de l'Est, of the Halles centrales, the central food market that once occupied the heart of Paris. Its layout records the stalls, aisles, and iron-framed bays that made the market work as a single, orderly system. Victor Baltard designed the pavilions in the 1850s and 1860s, when Napoleon III and Haussmann were reshaping the city, and the market became known as the "belly of Paris." The market was demolished in the early 1970s, so drawings like this one are now the most precise record of how it was arranged.
