Center Market was the great public market house on Seventh Street in Washington, D.C., and this ground plan lays out its floor in the cut-and-dry manner of an architect's drawing, with the stalls, aisles and entrances set out as a grid. Markets like this one were the city's chief source of fresh meat, produce and dairy in the nineteenth century, so the plan shows how a crowded working space was arranged to move both buyers and goods. The building grew large and busy enough to need careful planning, and the drawing is worth studying for how it balanced public access with the practical needs of vendors. It is a useful record of how the capital fed itself before supermarkets changed the way people shopped.
