Washington Market sat at the lower west edge of Manhattan, and by the time this view was made it had grown into one of the city's principal sources of fresh food, drawing wagons, carts and buyers from the surrounding farms and the river docks. Markets of this kind were the working heart of a dense, rapidly growing city, where produce, meat and dairy changed hands in open streets before the arrival of refrigerated distribution. The scene it shows reflects the crowded commerce that made the district famous, and the market's later history, including its eventual clearing for new construction, makes such images a useful record of how New York fed itself.
