Hunts Point, a peninsula on the Bronx's southwestern shore, was chosen as the site for a wholesale food hub meant to replace the crowded Washington Market in Lower Manhattan. This architect's drawing presents the planned complex as a working system, with its buildings and access routes laid out to move produce, meat and fish efficiently. The New York City Terminal Market opened in 1967 and grew into one of the largest food distribution centers in the country. Drawings like this one helped coordinate engineers, city planners and the businesses that would lease space, and they show how much planning went into relocating a city's food supply.
