Washington Market, on the lower west side of Manhattan, was the city's main wholesale food market for much of the nineteenth century, and the scene here reflects its busy, crowded working life. Farmers, produce dealers and carters gathered along its stalls and streets to buy and sell fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy goods that arrived by wagon and boat from surrounding farms and markets. The neighborhood grew up around these trades, and the market's bustle made it one of the most recognizable commercial districts in the city. Later in the century, the area was redeveloped and the market was gradually moved and reshaped as New York expanded.
