Few places in New York tied city streets to farm produce as closely as Washington Market, the wholesale food district on the west side of lower Manhattan. Farmers, merchants and carters brought fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy into the area for sale, and the surrounding blocks filled with market buildings, loading docks and crowded sidewalks. The market grew through the 1800s and into the early 1900s, then declined after mid-century as food distribution moved to larger facilities outside the city. Pictures like this one show how a rural supply trade sat right in the middle of dense urban streets.
