The Bronx Terminal Market was a wholesale food hub built along the Harlem River, and this picture shows the powerhouse that kept its cold storage and operations running. Markets like this one were the engine behind how New York City ate: produce, meat and dairy arrived by rail, truck and barge, and had to be held at the right temperature until dealers could move it out. The powerhouse, with its plant and smokestacks, is the part of the complex that often gets overlooked, yet without it the refrigerated warehouses around it would have had no reliable source of power. Look at how the utilitarian brick and the working yard sit beside the river, a reminder of how much infrastructure stood behind the city's food supply.
