A new meat center is what sets this view apart from the market's other scenes, marking a dedicated section of the complex devoted to a single trade. Brooklyn Terminal Market was built to concentrate the buying and selling of food in one place, so grocers and restaurant buyers could purchase goods in bulk from many dealers under one roof. Meat was among the most perishable and most closely regulated of those goods, which made a separate building with cold storage and sanitary work areas an important addition. The facility reflects the wholesale distribution practices of the mid-twentieth century, when central markets handled much of a city's food supply.
