Rather than the market halls as a whole, this view looks up into the roof framing of the Grands Pavillons at Les Halles, the central food market in Paris. Victor Baltard designed the cast-iron and glass pavilions in the 1850s and 1860s, and their lattice of iron members let light and air move through the market's wide floors. The market served Parisians for more than a century before most of the pavilions were dismantled in the early 1970s. Details like these roof spaces show the engineering that made the halls notable in their day.
