Few buildings tied a town's market to its tax collectors as directly as the public weigh-house, and this sheet lays one out in full with a floor plan, elevations and a cross-section, so a builder could read the whole structure from a single page. Official scales gave merchants and buyers a shared standard for settling disputes over grain, wool and other bulk goods, which made the weighing place a point of civic trust as well as commerce. Drawings like this one, with their measured lines and lettered details, show how such buildings were meant to be arranged and checked.
