Few wartime posters tie a donation appeal so directly to a named commander. The title invokes Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, whose German force in East Africa kept fighting long after Germany's defeat elsewhere. This 1918 color lithograph, with the name Grotemeyer attached in the record, asked Germans to give to a fund for colonial soldiers, drawing on popular pride in the empire's overseas holdings. Lettow-Vorbeck's guerrilla campaign through the East African bush, fought with European and African troops, made him a national hero at home, and the poster trades on that reputation. The subject list also includes horses, a reminder of how much the campaign depended on animal transport.
