Few posters from wartime Germany put a single commander so squarely at the center as this color lithograph of Paul von Hindenburg. Printed in Munich by Dr. C. Wolf und Sohn in 1917, it carries the name of the artist Louis Oppenheim, and its subject headings note that the sheet includes quotations attributed to the field marshal. By 1917 Hindenburg had become a national hero for his victory over Russian forces at Tannenberg in 1914, and he was serving as chief of the German General Staff. Posters like this one turned his reputation into a tool for rallying public support for the war effort.
