The title, "Die beste Sparkasse: Kriegsanleihe!", reads "The best savings bank: war bonds!", a pitch that makes the state's war loan sound safer than any bank account. Louis Oppenheim's color lithograph pairs the idea of savings with helmets and money, the two things the German government needed from its citizens in 1917. Germany financed much of its fighting through a series of war loans, and posters like this one urged ordinary people to lend their savings to the state as a patriotic duty. Oppenheim was a Berlin graphic artist known for his wartime posters, and this one shows how propaganda turned personal thrift into support for the front.
