Its German slogan makes an unusual argument: peace, it says, is the path the enemies do not want, so citizens should buy war bonds. The poster, signed by an artist named only as Bernhard, pairs that message with clenched fists to turn resolve into a call to lend money to the state. Germany financed much of its war through public loans called Kriegsanleihen, and the first of these drives came in 1914 as fighting began. Posters like this one asked ordinary people to see buying a bond as a patriotic duty, and the bold color lithography was built to catch the eye on city streets.
