Its German caption argues that the road to peace runs through war bonds, claiming that the enemies want it that way, and the clenched fists make the appeal blunt. *Kriegsanleihe* means war loan, the government bonds Germany sold to its citizens to help pay for the First World War. Campaigns in 1914 asked ordinary people to lend their savings to the state as a patriotic duty. The poster is signed only "Bernhard," and its color lithograph reflects the wartime effort to reach a broad public through eye-catching posters. Its reversal of the usual logic of peace and war is worth noticing.
