The title turns on a farming image: if you want to reap peace, you must first sow, and the line trails off before saying what the sowing should be. That agricultural metaphor was common in German public messaging during the First World War, when posters, postcards and printed slogans urged home-front patience, sacrifice and faith that the nation's effort would eventually pay off. Read against the war, the phrase promises that present hardship would bear fruit later. Such slogans were written to rally support rather than to describe conditions on the ground, so it is worth viewing them alongside the wider wartime evidence.
