Its German slogan, "Helft den Hütern Eures Glückes," asks viewers to help the guardians of their happiness, a phrase that points to the soldiers at the front and makes buying bonds a personal duty. Germany financed much of its war effort through public loans called Kriegsanleihen, and the government ran nine of them between 1914 and 1918. By 1918 the empire was short of resources and morale at home was fading, so posters like this one worked to tie individual savings to the men fighting abroad. Notice how the appeal presents a financial purchase as an act of loyalty.
