This 1918 lithograph takes its title from bookkeeping: "Soll und Haben," or debit and credit, is applied to the war year 1917 as if the nation were settling its accounts. Its heraldic and crown motifs, which the catalog records, point to the imperial state's effort to present the war as a sum of gains and losses. German home-front posters of this period often used such accounting metaphors to rally support for war loans and sustained sacrifice in the war's fourth year.
