The Kaiser's Christmas Journey," the German title of this 1917 color lithograph, marks it as a holiday poster with a political edge, unlike the sentimental Christmas cards on the board. Its catalog subjects (German military life, churches, and fences) suggest a village or front-line setting in which the season and the war meet. Wartime German posters like this one were meant to sustain morale and public support at home, and this example, printed at 69 by 95 centimeters, was designed to be seen on walls and in public spaces. It later passed through the Rehse archive of contemporary history and publicity materials before reaching the Library of Congress.
