Its caption, "Give us a hand old man!", sets this poster apart from many recruiting appeals of the war by speaking to a man in a familiar, friendly tone rather than a call to young volunteers. Issued in 1915 by the Central Council for the Organization of Recruiting in Ireland and printed by M'Caw, Stevenson & Orr in Dublin and Belfast, it belongs to a campaign to raise men across Irish communities as the war in Europe passed its first year. Recruiting drives of this kind drew on Irish Parliamentary Party leaders such as John Redmond, who urged enlistment in the hope of linking Irish loyalty to the promise of Home Rule. The poster shows how recruiters tried to reach men beyond the young soldiers they most wanted.
