Saint Patrick, Ireland's patron saint, is what sets this poster apart from the many recruiting images of the First World War. Here he appears as a vision to a plowman at work in the field, and the caption asks whether the viewer can "any longer resist the call." The chromolithograph was printed by M'Caw, Stevenson & Orr, a firm with offices in Dublin and Belfast, and issued by the Department of Recruiting for Ireland in 1915. Pairing a national saint with a rural scene was a deliberate appeal to Irish audiences, whom British authorities hoped to draw into the army during the war.
