Few recruiting posters from this campaign rely on a card table, but this one asks the viewer to join a game that needs one more player, under the question "Will you make a fourth?" The Department of Recruiting for Ireland issued it around 1915, when Britain was pressing for volunteers as the war dragged on without a clear end. Alex. Thom & Co., a major Dublin printing firm, produced the chromolithograph. Its relaxed, domestic scene of soldiers at cards reflects a common recruiting strategy: presenting enlistment as companionship and ordinary good sense rather than as a call to battle.
