The German wording addresses returning soldiers directly: "Heroes from the front! The homeland greets you! Be heartily welcome!" Dated 1915, it reflects the early years of the war, when civilians in Germany offered public gratitude to men arriving home on leave or from hospital. Printed greetings of this kind helped frame the front as a place of sacrifice and the home front as its grateful counterpart. Note how the text speaks to "you" rather than describing the soldiers, turning a simple welcome into a statement of national solidarity.
