Women! Care for Peace and Bread!" urges this 1919 color lithograph, which asks German women to vote and to campaign for the election in the same breath. The poster was issued by the Ausschuss der Frauenverbände Deutschlands, a committee of German women's associations, and it ties the vote to the hunger and uncertainty left by the First World War. In January 1919, German women cast ballots in a national election for the first time, choosing the National Assembly that would draft the Weimar Constitution. Pairing household necessities with political duty framed the vote as a way for women to shape Germany's postwar recovery.
