A German wartime poster promotes the peace treaty with Ukraine as if it were a new motion picture, billing it as the "Neuester Film," or "newest film." Germany signed the treaty in February 1918, at a time when the Central Powers were trying to secure grain and other resources from the territories that had split from the collapsing Russian Empire. Using the language of cinema advertising was a common approach in wartime propaganda, which aimed to make a political settlement feel dramatic, current and easy to grasp for the public at home.
