Three German phrases, "ungestörte Demobilmachung," "Aufbau der Republik," and "Frieden," set out the poster's program: an undisturbed demobilization, the building of the republic, and peace. This color lithograph from 1919 was printed on two sheets that together measure 139 by 96 centimeters. It dates from the months after the German armistice of November 1918, when millions of soldiers were returning home and the new Weimar Republic was taking shape. The slogan addresses the central political questions of that year: how to bring the troops home without unrest, and how to secure a lasting peace after the war.
