Picolata, a river landing on the St. Johns River west of St. Augustine, is the setting here, with soldiers camped outside the fortified houses that sheltered settlers and troops during the Second Seminole War. The lithograph was printed in Charleston in 1837 by T.F. Gray and James as the third of eight Views of Florida, a hand-colored series that offered audiences at the time a glimpse of the conflict. The title was supplied by library staff, and the place name "Picolata" was pencilled beneath the image, so it is one of the few details tied to the original record. Military camps were a common subject for printmakers of the period, who often showed the war in tidy, orderly scenes.
