Tents and clouds share the frame in this 1917 view of the Hill Camp at the Hanoum Camps near Thetford, Vermont, where the sky takes up nearly as much room as the canvas shelters. Clara E. Sipprell made it in the orbit of the Clarence H. White School of Photography, whose pictorialists favored soft tonal effects and carefully arranged landscape over sharp documentary detail. Printed in gelatin silver on thin tissue, it is a small, quiet image that was later reproduced in a 1996 study of the school.
