Few photographs from the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection place a youth organization so far north, but this 1915 print shows Camp Fire Girls in Juneau, Alaska, offering a flag salute. Camp Fire Girls was founded in 1910 as a national program for girls, emphasizing outdoor activity, handicraft and civic duty, and its members often performed patriotic rituals at public gatherings. In the 1910s Juneau was the territorial capital and a busy gold-mining and fishing port, so a group of girls saluting the American flag there reflects the strong sense of national belonging that organizations like this sought to build in remote communities.
