The poster advertises Ntozake Shange's *For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf*, a choreopoem in which seven women speak and dance through stories of love, violence, and survival. The New York Shakespeare Festival, led by Joseph Papp, staged the play at its Public Theater in 1976, and it later moved to Broadway that fall. Its frank treatment of Black women's lives was new to many audiences, and it drew both acclaim and controversy. The illustration is by Paul Davis, an artist known for bold graphic work in the 1970s.
