Shown on horseback, Paul Revere evokes the night ride of April 18, 1775, when he rode through Massachusetts to warn colonial militia that British troops were marching on Concord. Arthur Szyk, a Polish-born illustrator who later settled in the United States, made this small color lithograph in 1930, when he was known for richly ornamented, miniature-style work. The image reflects how the ride had become a patriotic symbol, popularized in large part by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "Paul Revere's Ride." Notice how the small sheet packs a dramatic episode of the Revolution into a few square inches.
