Lafayette's baptism of fire shows the young French nobleman at the Battle of Brandywine in September 1777, the first time he faced enemy fire. Not yet twenty, he had crossed the Atlantic at his own expense to offer his services to the Continental Army, and Congress commissioned him a major general despite his limited military experience. He was wounded in the leg during the fighting, though the injury did not keep him out of the war for long. Edward Percy Moran painted the scene in the patriotic historical style popular in the early twentieth century, and this color halftone reproduction made it available to a wide audience.
