This chromolithograph reproduces a painting by C. W. Chapman, an ordnance sergeant with the 59th Virginia Regiment in Wise's Brigade, so the scene comes from a man who lived in the camps he portrayed. Published in London by Louis Zimmer and copyrighted in 1871, it presents Confederate encampment as a color print, several years after the war ended. Prints like this helped shape a nostalgic picture of Southern soldiering, with tents, campfires and everyday routine standing in for the hardship of the conflict. The title's quotation marks around "Confederate camp" are worth noticing, since they signal a subject still sensitive in the years after 1865.
