Frances Palmer, who signed this 1846 lithograph "F.P.," drew a political cartoon that links the Oregon dispute with New York street life. The print's subjects are the Bowery Boys, a rowdy urban gang, and Irish Americans, and the title "War! Or no war" echoes the slogans of the boundary quarrel with Britain over the Pacific Northwest. Printed by F. & S. Palmer in New York, it reflects the satirical style that made the firm's prints popular with a broad public. The Oregon Treaty, which set the border at the 49th parallel, was signed later that same year.
