Louis Armstrong is shown here with his trumpet, the instrument at the center of a career that reshaped jazz in the 1920s and beyond. Born in New Orleans in 1901, Armstrong rose from the city's dance halls and street bands to become one of the most recognizable musicians in America, known for his bright tone, improvisational flair and gravelly, warm singing voice. Portraits like this one helped carry his image and sound far beyond the clubs where he first made his name. Look closely at the trumpet and posture to see the easy confidence that audiences around the world came to associate with him.
