This photograph records a statue of Louis II de Bourbon, known as the Grand Condé, the French prince who lived from 1621 to 1686. He won a decisive victory over Spanish forces at Rocroi in 1643, while still a young man, and later fought against the Crown during the Fronde before returning to serve Louis XIV. The record dates the print only roughly, between 1900 and 1950, and does not name the photographer. Its subject is a sculpted monument rather than the man himself, so the image shows how later generations chose to honor a soldier whose career spanned the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV.
