Gathered in Casablanca, Morocco, in January 1943, the officers in this group portrait were senior military planners of the Allied war effort. The meeting, known as the Casablanca Conference, brought President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill together with their military chiefs to set strategy after the Allied landings in North Africa. Decisions reached there included the next steps against Sicily and Italy and the call for unconditional surrender by the Axis powers. The photograph was made by a U.S. Army Signal Corps photographer and later held by the Office of War Information, which distributed wartime images to the public.
