Few sporting subjects drew as much public attention in late nineteenth-century America as harness racing, and this chromolithograph shows pacers contesting a grand purse, the large prize that drew owners and crowds to the trotting tracks. Louis Maurer, a frequent illustrator of horses for the firm, signed the design, and Currier & Ives published it in New York around 1890. Pacers move the two legs on each side together, a gait prized for speed and smoothness, and the firm's racing prints carried that enthusiasm into homes across the country.
