This lithograph presents itself as a national union banner for the 1860 presidential race, setting the candidates beside their platform. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that produced campaign prints by the thousands, issued it as the country was splitting over slavery and four tickets, Lincoln, Douglas, Breckinridge, and Bell, offered sharply different answers. Prints like this were cheap enough for voters and political clubs to buy, so they show how partisans wanted their causes summarized and displayed. At about 33 by 25 centimeters, it was meant for a wall or a hand-held display rather than a large parade banner.
