Harper's Weekly placed its own claim front and center in this color poster, calling the magazine the "National authority on amateur sport." The design is by Maxfield Parrish, who was just beginning his career as an illustrator in the 1890s and would later become known for his luminous, idealized painting. The date on the record is only partly legible, so the poster is best placed in that decade, when organized amateur athletics such as college football, rowing, and bicycling were drawing growing public interest. Commercial posters like this one show how periodicals competed for readers by linking themselves to those pastimes.
