A nude figure absorbed in a book gives this August 1897 Scribner's poster its distinct character, a subject the catalog records under both nudes and reading. Maxfield Parrish, then a young Philadelphia illustrator early in his career, designed it to promote the magazine's fiction number. His smooth, luminous color already hints at the style that later made him one of the best-known illustrators of his era. Posters like this one helped publishers announce monthly issues to readers in the 1890s.
