Few posters of the period promised readers a backward look at a whole era as plainly as this one, which sells Scribner's on its account of the last quarter century in America. The artist signed it only with a monogram, and the record does not identify the maker. Scribner's, published by Charles Scribner's Sons in New York, was among the leading illustrated magazines of the 1890s, and its posters belonged to a boom in color lithographic advertising that put magazine displays on city streets and in shop windows.
