Jeff's double quick" is a sheet music cover that turns Jefferson Davis's capture in May 1865 into a joke about his supposed disguise. Northern newspapers and cartoonists widely reported that Davis had been caught in women's clothing as he fled Union cavalry in Georgia, and the hoop skirt in the title plays on that story. Lee & Walker of Philadelphia issued the piece in 1865, with proceeds going to the Western Sanitary Fairs in Chicago and Milwaukee, charity fundraisers that supported Union soldiers and their families. The olive and black lithograph shows how wartime sheet music could carry political satire into parlors.
