Few wartime pictures show the rivalry between Allied troops as bluntly as this one. Its caption, set in Melbourne, has a brash American soldier telling an Australian to take his time at the front because he has his hands full with a sweetheart back home. This color reproduction of a Japanese propaganda sheet was designed to exploit the friction that grew when large numbers of American servicemen arrived in Australia during the Pacific war. Its messages about infidelity and sexual misconduct were meant to turn allies against one another and unsettle the families of men serving overseas.
