A swan, an unexpected emblem for a baby-care message, sets this silkscreen poster apart from typical health notices of its day. Its title, "Be clean in everything that concerns your baby," pairs that white bird with a plea for hygiene in infant care, and the image's bright color would have made it stand out on a wall or in a clinic. The Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, which ran from 1935 to 1943, employed artists to make posters like this for public agencies, and its district units produced many health and safety campaigns. A date stamp on the back, July 18, 1939, shows when this copy circulated.
