Among the civic posters of the Depression years, this one speaks directly to tenants, asking New Yorkers living in multifamily buildings to keep their own premises clean. It was issued in the name of the New York City Tenement House Department, the agency that oversaw conditions in the city's tenements, and it reflects an era when sanitation and building upkeep were pressing public concerns. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored the work, and its poster program used silkscreen to produce inexpensive public messages in bold color. A date stamped on the back, April 16, 1937, records when the poster was processed or circulated.
