Few WPA posters take a fairy tale as their subject, which sets this Illinois silkscreen, titled "Once upon a time," apart from the health and civic announcements that filled much of the program's output. The Little Red Riding Hood story it draws on was a staple of children's reading, and the poster was probably meant to promote reading or library activities for young audiences. Silkscreen let Federal Art Project artists print bold color runs cheaply in quantity, which made it central to the poster division's work. A September 1939 date stamp on the back offers a clue to when the print was handled.
