The lettering announces Elmer Rice's *Judgment Day* as a first-ever San Diego staging, a local premiere that the Federal theater Project brought to the city in 1938. Rice was a prominent American playwright, and the Federal theater Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration, put people back to work in theater during the Depression and sent productions to communities that rarely saw live drama. The poster was made in silkscreen, a method the WPA poster units used widely to print inexpensive, bold graphics for public notices.
