*Judgment Day* was a play by the dramatist Elmer Rice, and this silkscreen poster advertises a Los Angeles staging of it in 1938 under the Federal theater Project. The project, part of the Works Progress Administration, was created in 1935 to put unemployed actors, directors and stagehands back to work, and its local units staged plays for audiences who could rarely afford commercial theater tickets. Posters like this one were produced by silkscreen, a method that allowed artists to print bold, flat color in sizable runs at low cost. The record spells the title "Judgement," a variant of the usual form.
